Conference Posters: Different Styles to Suit

PRE-WORK for CONFERENCE

Where We Want to Live

Occasionally, pre-conference work is required.  This may include animating basic charts and graphs for on-screen presentation during the day.  During this process I have sometimes spotted points that were ambiguous and needed tweaking by client

PRE-WORK CHARTING

This is Where We Live

Pre-conference work may include drawing-up charts and the re-writing of raw data, to create slides for screening on the day

OPENINGS and KEYNOTES

Keynote Speaker

Opening speeches and motivational keynote speakers: I will draw these people before conference.  During speech, I will mainly record the dialogue – it is invariably an informative and inspiring part of the day, and message-capture is crucial

ON-THE-DAY ACTION …

Stories that Sell Connection Culture

Example of live-recording.  This was part of a contracted motivational trainer’s segment

————

RECORDING THE FLOW …

Cascading Waterfall Management versus Agile Management

Graphics for processes.  This one involved my sitting with a small team and pressing them to come up with a hands-on example of Waterfall versus Agile.  I always want to understand the messages and ideas in the room, therefore making posters accessible to all.

TIME OUT

2.0 outside work

Light reading.  These were simply cartoons prepared during midday break, and touching on topics that would be covered after lunch.  This type of fluff helps keep attendees amused and/or attentive as the day(s) wear on

————

FAST AND FURIOUS

Break-outs Bullets

Bullet points (Panic scribing).  Rapid notes and quick thumbnail sketches help me capture a mass of quickly-delivered information.  Especially useful where a speaker is given too little time, but has a lot of interesting points to press.

YOU DREW WHAT?!

Work Out Loud!

Cartoon metaphors in conferences.  I’ll sometimes take a workplace concept, and shift it into the absurd.  The key points are still in there – just seen in a different (and perhaps easily memorable) way.

Work Groups: CREATING A TITLE PAGE

China - Political cartoon by Roger Harvey, Sydney Australia

China

Summary Scenarios.  I will prepare the lead poster before conference, drawing on supplied agenda and briefing from facilitator and executive assistant

AFTER THE CONFERENCE

Best People Awards

POST-CONFERENCE FUNCTIONS:  I attended a post-AGM formal dinner … and made notes of the company’s annual awards for Best Practice.  Poster created next day.

DELETING THE POST-ITS FOREST …

Stereotypes and fears when booking online

CONFERENCE POST-IT NOTES:  Conferences often include brainstorming sessions with lecture boards and many postal notes.  I can photograph the results – and draw visual versions back at my office.

POSTERS FOR FUTURE TRAINING

Staff Training for Conferences

CONFERENCE IDEAS FOR THE ORGANISATION:  When delegates create solutions, new methods and company visions; these may need to be graphically recorded.   This series of training charts was drawn back at my office, working from photos of whiteboards’ bullet points.

NOTES ON THE DAY

Digital World

SHORT CONFERENCES: If I attend a short two-hour or so segment of a day, I will just take notes (As against a whole day’s postering work, with posters arranged along walls around conference venue).  This series of charts was created back at office, digitised – and transmitted to client.
